Restoring Slate Tiles in Kitchen and Utility room

Located in Ratho near Edinburgh, our customer’s kitchen and utility room tiles had not been cleaned since they had moved in years ago. The heavy foot traffic from the family and pets had left the once colorful slate tiles dull and dirty.

Before proceeding with the full cleaning and resealing, a test clean was done on two tiles to determine the best cleaning solution and process. The Tile Doctor’s Pro-Clean, diluted 1 part to 2 parts water, was found to be the most effective at stripping the old sealer and pulling out the embedded dirt when scrubbed with a black pad on a rotary buffer. The grout lines were also thoroughly cleaned with a grout brush.

After rinsing and extracting the soiled solution, an acid wash using Tile Doctor Grout Clean-up was applied to help neutralize the pH and remove any remaining grout smears or efflorescence.
Once the floor had fully dried overnight, two coats of Tile Doctor’s Colour Grow sealer were applied. This matt finish sealer enhanced the natural colours of the slate tiles. The customer was amazed to see the vibrant blues, yellows, and greens that had been obscured by years of dirt and grime.

The customer was advised to maintain the fresh appearance of the tiles using Tile Doctor’s Neutral Tile Cleaner, which would lift daily dirt build up without damaging the new sealer. With the proper care, the revived slate tiles would continue to look great for years to come.
